I was on my way home from the rehearsal dinner (Nov. 21st) the evening before my wedding when something terrible happened.
I felt like I was on top of the world. I felt like it was my day, our day. It was the same feeling you get when it's your birthday, but even better.
You may remember the snow storm that hit pretty hard that night. It was snowing pretty hard but that didn't stop us from having an incredible time at our rehearsal and dinner. All of our closest friends and family were there, many of them telling us things like, "You two are meant to be together."
On the way home, the roads didn't look so bad. Apparently, they were worse than they looked. I was driving home by myself when I hit a patch of slush and started fish-tailing into the other lane toward an oncoming car. Somehow I managed to get my car going the other direction but heading off the road.
I slid about 60 feet off road (and I don't think I was speeding). I began screaming my prayer out loud hoping that my car would stop. In those moments, I felt closer to God than ever.
When my car finally stopped, I had no idea where I was because my windows were covered in snow. I opened my door to find my car perpendicular to the road (facing away from the road) with a ditch 1 foot behind my car (with rocks in it) and another ditch 1 foot in front of my car with water in it. Somehow I managed to slide between 2 telephone poles, a fire hydrant, and 2 ditches.
I was able to drive my car back onto the road after a 99-point turn (maybe a bit of an exaggeration). I was completely safe and my car had no damage. I know that the Lord was with me because if my car had gone off the road in any other place or at any other angle, I may not have made it to my wedding.
Ironically, that morning, I read this verse:
Proverbs 3:5-6 (New King James Version)
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct[a] your paths.
Another bit of "irony," my car was facing a park (the exact spot) where Jen and I had spent much time together.
