Birthdays can set us up for disappointment. The emphasis our culture puts on birthdays is ridiculous. Somehow we’ve decided that birthdays are “my” day—where everything in the world revolves around me—where everyone else’s focus needs to be on me.
When we have these expectations, it’s easy to start feeling sorry for ourselves—because no matter what, someone is going to forget your birthday, someone is going to be rude to you even though it’s your birthday, and when all is said and done, birthdays just don’t satisfy.
It’s strange that the one birthday that really deserves to be celebrated, the birth of Christ—we’ve taken the focus off of Him and placed it upon ourselves.
There are people around the world starving to death on their birthday. There are people dying of an incurable disease on their birthday. There are people who are far too poor to celebrate their birthday.
So I’ll live this day to the glory of God keeping my focus on Him and let the other 19,575,510 birthdays have Feb. 2nd.
